How Can Paraprofessionals Support a Student with Persistent Screaming in the Classroom?
It’s challenging when a student screams all day and asks to go home, especially when other staff responses, like yelling, escalate the behavior.
As a paraprofessional, create a calm-down area with sensory tools like a stress ball or headphones to redirect distress. Use short, calm phrases like “let’s take a break” to de-escalate. Collaborate with the IEP team to identify triggers, possibly separation anxiety or sensory overload, and request a behavior plan. Model positive interactions for other paras to avoid worsening behaviors. Connect with special education forums for shared strategies. If the teacher’s absence continues, consult the special education coordinator for interim support.
