How Can Parents Support a Child with Special Needs Struggling in a General Education Classroom?

It can be overwhelming when a child with special needs transitions to a general education classroom, like science, without special education options and struggles academically despite effort.

Ensure the IEP includes accommodations like simplified assignments, extra time, or graphic organizers to support learning.

Meet with the classroom helper and teacher to align strategies, such as breaking tasks into smaller steps or using visual aids.

Request a co-taught class or additional resource support if available. Arrange tutoring or study skills sessions to build confidence.

Connect with parent advocacy groups for tips on navigating general education transitions. If grades don’t improve, consult the IEP team for a functional academic assessment or revised accommodations.
