What Does an Autism Diagnosis Without a Level Mean for Your Child?

It’s confusing when your child’s autism diagnosis doesn’t come with a level—it usually means the evaluation didn’t specify severity (Level 1, 2, or 3) based on support needs, which can happen if the diagnostic process focused on confirming autism rather than categorizing it.

Levels reflect how much support a child needs in social communication and behaviors, but not all clinicians assign them. Since ABA and other therapies were recommended, ask your provider or pediatrician for a follow-up assessment to clarify support needs, which can guide therapy intensity.

For now, continue therapies and track how your child responds to tailor their plan.
