What is Child Find?

Child Find is the process schools must use to determine which students may have a disability which requiring special education or 504 plans.

The Child Find mandate, part of the IDEA Act, requires all school districts to actively identify, locate, and assess all children with disabilities. This ensures that children who need special education and related services receive them. While some schools struggle to identify students with disabilities promptly, our special education plans are designed to address concerns raised by parents or teachers quickly.

Child Find aims to accurately identify all individuals with disabilities, including:

  • Infants and young children
  • Children whose first language isn't English
  • Students with severe disabilities
  • Students in private schools
  • Children from families who move a lot
  • Children suspected of having a disability, even if they're progressing in school
